Olympic handover flag to be raised at Grand Pier

21st August 2008

Weston-super-Mare has been chosen as one of the towns to fly an Olympic flag high in the sky to mark the day England becomes the event's host nation.

The emblem will be raised at the Grand Pier on Sunday at 2.30pm.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games announced this week that the resort will feature the Olympic Handover Flag to celebrate the moment when London becomes the official host city.

It will be put up simultaneously with other specially-chosen areas in the UK.

Local sports stars and potential future Olympians Sarah Clark, Rebecca Maslin and Natasha Maslin, will be on hand to help North Somerset Council chairman Ian Porter raise the standard this weekend.

Sports personality Grace Isaac, who competed in the 400m freestyle swimming event at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, will also attend the ceremony.

The Olympic Handover Flag in North Somerset will be one of more than 500 flags delivered to locations across the nation.

Grand Pier co-owner Michelle Michael said: "Having the Olympic flag raised above the Grand Pier is a real sign of hope for the future.

"We're looking ahead to rebuilding the Grand Pier and also to the London Olympics of 2012, which will be a huge boost for tourism throughout the country.
