Grand Pier Latest News
The Barge has Arrived!
21st April 2009
The latest news about the Pier is the start of the rebuild. A barge has been parked next to the Pier to hold the equipment and a large crane for the building work. Both the Weston Mercury and the Bristol Evening Post have given us excellent coverage of the barge’s arrival.
We have taken several pictures of the barge arriving at the Pier and they are posted in the ‘month one’ album on our facebook page.
A BARGE carrying a huge crane has arrived next to Weston's Grand Pier.
A tug boat pulled the vessel into place at about 11am today (Thurs) after setting off from Cardiff at 8am.
Weston Mercury reporter Sam Pope was out in a Paramount Water Safety boat and on the roof of Weston College to capture the event on video.
The spud leg barge will be used to transfer materials on to the pier to be used in work to strengthen the fire-damaged structure.
It has four legs that will be anchored into the seabed so it remains stable and can be brought up to the level of the pier boardwalk.
This means the shore-end of the pier can still be visited during the building work and prevents the structure being weakened by driving materials along its length.
