We have been visiting WSM for over 50 years (We live in the Midlands) and was upset by the fire and look forward to visiting the New pier when its rebuilt. We visited WSM just after the fire and found a couple of bits of burnt driftwood as a memory to go on the fireplace back home. We love the webcam on the pier and the movement of the flags etc..seemed to prove its LIVE, but the camera has moved and movement viewed is almost nil. could it be moved a little or even a 2nd camera mounted to give even better views. We hope you can help in some way and we look forward to visiting WSM and the pier very soon. I had my first job uder the Grand Pier in the late 1950's, I was only 7 years old. My late Aunt and Uncle lived at cromer road WSM and looked after me at their house during all my school holidays. To fund my visits, I spent many hours sifting through the sand with a garden riddle looking for lost coins dropped through the gaps that used to be in the boardwalk. It kept me in ice creams and pop and was my first paid job. My wife and I still run our own business and I guess that this experience helped us to become successful. Thankyou for your time, good luck for the future.

I'd first like to say how sad and upset I was to see the terrible images of the Grand Pier's destruction on TV. My family is from Bristol and as a child I regularly visited the town and pier... much as I now do with Brighton. I sincerely hope it will be possible to restore it and possibly improve the facilities in the future.

I am 16 years old and have had many great days out at Weston. The pier was our highlight after a long day shopping and eating fish and chips. The loss of the peir was very sad news, and to think people will never see it again is tragic. When the pavillion is rebuilt, i would love to see it rebuilt to its original state as if nothing ever happened, so i can always get that great feeling when i am walking towards it!

In the wake of the tragedy of the pier being burnt, how wonderful that the new owners treated us all to the fantastic Red Arrows display. How wonderful to stand on the beach and watch such an incredible display. If only the Council would give half of the exhorbitant car park fees from the visitors it attracted to help the rebuilding of the pier ! Thankyou once again.

Sorry to here about the pier. When you rebuild it will some of the old rides come back like the ghost train and will it be scarier. From Tyrone aged 8, I was on holiday at weston on 15th August for my birthday and also on my 7th birthday.

I visited Weston yesterday for the first time. My son has just moved to the area. The sun was shining and although a bit windy there were lots of people around. It is truly a wanderful place. I am a northerner and so compared Weston to Blackpool. There is no comparison. Weston is a warm friendly old fashioned seaside resort for all ages a little gem. I could see the pier was badly damaged and the bottom end however the top end was great. There seemed to be something going on with the Lord Mayor and TV cameras, I am not sure what but assume it was to do with the rebuilding fund. We have a lovely day out at Weston and I do hope that your resort goes from strngth to strength as it shows the very best of Britain. Good Luck to you all

I think I can safely speak for a number of people that whilst the Grand Pier burned a part of many childhoods died also. Personally, I have many happy memories of spending time with my parents and grandparents on the pier at Weston and now knowing that the Pavillion is no more leaves a hole in the heart. A truly sad day for all the residents of Weston and those who have been lucky enough to have visited. Let us hope the new owners rebuild it to reflect how dear it is held by so many.

I was 8yrs old when 1 first went to Weston and have been either staying or on a day visit to weston every year. All my childhood memories are going on the pier. I have taken my children and grandchildren with me. I was on holiday in Cornwall when my daughter rang me and told me the sad news. I just sat down and cried. I know my first time on seeing the pier as it is today I know that I will have another cry. I know that you will endevour to get the pier up and running as soon as you possibly can and that will be a very special occasion.

I admire Kerry and Michelle Michael for their ongoing determination to restore the Grand Pier, and not to let this defeat them. As a Weston resident, I visited the pier many times as a child and occasionally as I started to get older, and I agree that this is a tragic loss. Hope to see a bright future for our pier.

To Whom it might concern. I have lived in and around weston for 38 years and cannot imagine our once glorious seafront without the Grand Pier and the old Pool/Tropicana. It was such sad news when the fire took hold. My kids are 6 and 7 and have visited the pier many times, enjoying the "old fashioned" attrations like the ghost train and the shooting galleries which squirt water at you. I am sure that you are now planning a brighter future for the Pier and I look forward to seeing what can be achieved. Have you looked into selling "I helped save the Pier" merchandise? I would love to help you with decorated T-shirts etc. if you would like to discuss it. I am a new business just opened in Weston and would be glad to put a proposal together if you haven't already got it covered.

Just felt i had to drop you a line.... I came down to Weston again yesterday for the second time from Bristol. I came down last weekend and was so shocked to see the pier so flat and "gone". I was really upset, just like countless others were when i had a phone call from mum and switched the news on only to see the Pier on fire. I stood there and had a discreet few tears last saturday but it was raining so nobody saw. We went down yesterday and it was really uplifting to see the sun shining, people on the beach with their bucket and spades and hordes of people on the Pier. Mum and I had a cup of tea and brought some goodies from the shop to show our support aswell as giving what we could towards restoration and things that the insurance didnt cover. I have just come on line as mum rang to say the Thanks giving service had been on the local news. I sat here and cried again and feel i just want to keep going down to Weston and have a cuppa on the "Ole faithfull". Sounds really silly but loosing the Pier has affected me like a few other things have in the years gone by like Lady Diana, The world Trade Center and Ken Bigly. It has left some sort of unhappy void in my life and its the same old story, "You dont realise what you have, until its gone". I've always taken Weston for granted as living so close has made it so familiar. I sat on the Pier yesterday and looked around. Its only now that that i realise what a wicked place it is.... We really wanted to go donw to the service today, but we were there in spirit and wish you all the luck and love in the world in trying to raise her up again. Im really glad you are local so The Pier meant the world to you aswell. x Rachel Bristol.

While I was very sad to hear of the fire at the pier, I was so pleased today to see that at least some of the pier is open again. I have watched the tragic decline of two piers near to me, Hastings and Brighton West. Hastings just seems to be left to rot and Brighton had the tragic arson attack. Please do all you can to save your pier. Too much of Britains heritage is being lost but I hope that you can come back bigger and better. Good luck!

I sat here that dreadfull morning watching the pictures unfold with tears streaming down my face so many childhood memorys lost in hours, it was a major sunday afternoon treat as a kid my dad would spend months saving me up all his coppers and old five pence peices and we would be on the pier for hours and hours i have very few nice memorys of my father but that was certainly one of them i will hold forever. May you both continue to love and cherish the pier and give it a heart once more i would dearly love to be able to bring my children to enjoy hours of fun as i did as a small child. Much love to you both keep strong you have a long journey ahead but im sure it will be worth it.

I am now 37 years of age and have spent many a happy hour on the Grand Pier, riding on the train and then playing the machines in the pavillion. I remember doing daytrips from my home in the west midlands and in those days the first thing you saw when arriving on the seafront was GRAND PIER in big red letters.A Fantastic Place full of memories not just for me but to thousands of others . Was there with my wife in may this year for the day and did the machines. Also nice to see the train still running. And what a lovely sight to see the pier lit up at night also. Completely distraught by the tragic fire. Please do all you can to bring this wonderful place back.

Just to say that when growing up, nearly every year of my life was spent on holiday in Somerset - be it Brean, Burnham-on-Sea, Cheddar Gorge etc.. but not one year was ever without a visit to Weston - and the pier was one of my favourites. I haven't visited this year, but hope to get down there - and look forward to seeing the pier restored to it's former glory even more. Good luck!

Our hearts sank to hear of the fire on the pier, as regular visitors to Weston we always made a day of visiting the pier. Its not until something tragic like this happens that you realise how much you respect landmarks from our country, its great to hear it will be rebuilt and Im sure it will have the same respect if not more than before. We are definately coming to visit the pier in the next couple of weeks as were on ours hols there soon. Heartfelt sympathy to all who loved and worked on the pier.

As a former resident of W-S-M, and a former employee of the previous owners of the pier, I'd like to add my condolences, sadness and support to the current owners, and the town of Weston-Super-Mare. I have very fond memories of my time working on the pier, and in many ways it was the best job I ever had, so to hear that it is to be restored to better than it's former glory is very heartening. Rest assured that, should a campaign be launched, I will offer what ever financial support I can to get the pier up and running again as soon as possible. Good luck to Kerry and Michelle, and to my former home town.

I was very sad to hear about the demise of the pier. My Father "Geordie" English had raised many thousands of pounds in his lifetime for charity. He died just over a year and a half ago but if he was still arround he would have been one of the first to raise monies for it's rebuild. Now living in Aberdeen I still remeber with great fondness of the times I visited the pier on my way to school and back. I visited it last year with my Grand Children and had a great day. Best wishes on it's rebirth and I shall be down to Weston next week so will pay it a visit. Norman English

My family and I were devastated watching the television news pictures of the Pier being destroyed by fire. I spent my summer school holidays at Weston and the pier in the fifties is what I remember most from those great times at my favourite resort. My family have been coming to the pier for many years and have always had a great time and many find memories. We would love to sponsor a plank on the replacement pier deck in return for having our name emobossed on a small plague set into the plank. Absolutely devastated by your Grand Pier tragedy. Could only see smoke arising therefrom during the afternoon,in Penarth, when early morning sea- mist had lifted. Had hitherto seen the building appearing as a green light during the clear evenings. Witnessed the former Grand Pier going up in smoke in January, 1930,(seem to think about 29th or 30th)- from a top window of the former Rozel Hotel- then owned by my late grandparents- Mr&Mrs A.A.Bodman. I would like to wish you all due success with building your replacement as speedily as is possible.

Hello, Just to express my sympathy and sadness. I rarely come to Weston now but when I do I come back as a child. There must be millions like me. Our first family holiday was at Uphill in a leaky caravan converted from a bus behind the golf course in a caravan field which was shared with cows. We came by bus.
Weston meant donkeys, the beach pool (polio scares precluded going in the 'sea'), chips, cockles and candyfloss on the Pier and visiting the machines. I never did win anything on those cranes! Last time we came my younger grandson was about 2 and desperately wanted to jump into the sea from outside the Pavillion. We were waiting for his older brother to choose something from the points he won so I had a long time restraining a very strong toddler. Neither of the boys wanted ice-cream because it was a cold day and Mike and I were really disappointed!
As I write this - rambling on unhelpfully - I wonder if it is feasible to get everyone to send in memories, anecdotes and photographs to publish a book to help finance the reconstruction? More formal landmarks could be threaded through. And do you know of famous people who might contribute their memories. It could be an exciting project which could raise the spirits of the staff. I am sure many people would want to buy it and not just because of the fire. Well, anyway, my heartfelt best wishes to all at the Pier.
'bye now Dawn M

I just wanted to send you and Michelle my best wishes. You must have had a terrible few days but you deserve great credit for the way you have responded. It's marvellous that you've managed to re-open so much of the pier today. I drove along the front with my children on Monday evening and walked along the sands to see the pier yesterday. Although I may be 47 I had to fight back the tears and I know people of all ages have felt the same. It is and always will be so important to Weston and you understand that so well. But I said to my children: "Don't worry it will be re-built." So I just want to wish you well and to say that everyone is behidn you and looking forward to the day the pavilion re-opens.

We were very sorry to just sit and watch the Grand Pier burn down on Monday morning. As a local resident it was hart breaking. I was only on the pier on Saturday and went on the new karts. Can you let us know if the Red Arrows will still be doing their display. (Yes, the Grand Pier sponsership of the Red Arrow will continue and we look forward to welcoming them to Weston-super-Mare on the 27th August) I hope so as we really should not give up and it is great that you are re-opening the safe part of the pier today. Perhaps a collection box should be set-up as I know we would donate and I am sure thousands of others will do the same to get this fantastic part of history restored.

I was devistated to hear and see pics of recent fire. Congratulations in stating that the pier will be restored. As a child a visit to weston would not be complete without a walk along the pier. It was part of our fondest memories. We spent many holidays in weston and also visited on many a day trip (Sunday School Outings). There must be many many thousands of people now in their 60s like myself who would willingly make a small donation to a fund if one was available to speed up the restoration of this wonderful building. It must be restored for future generations of children. Very Best wishes to you and your staff .
Ps If there is a way of sending a donation please let me know.

I am from Weston, I was born and brought up there. It was a sad day when I saw on the news showing the fire which has destroyed all the hard work recently put in to make Grand Pier so fantastic. I have been getting great reports from friends and family that it was improved very much and had planned to visit next time I am down to see my family. I am praying that you have all the luck in the world and that you suceed in your task of ressurecting and rebuilding the Jewel which has glittered and shone on the seafront for many years. Best regards Andrew, Louisa, Todd (10) and Rachel (6)

My sincere condolences for the loss of the pier - such a sad loss. I hope that you get the support that you need to help re-build this important asset to Weston.

The recent tragic fire reminded me of the very happy times we used to have in Weston between 1947 and 1955. I sincerely hope that the pier will be rebuilt without delay. Is there an archive of photgraphs, accessible on the internet, of the pier and beach covering the years I visited as a child, as we couldn't afford a camera and film in those days.

How sad that the Pier has been destroyed in the fire. I wish you the best of luck in rebuilding such an iconic structure.

I, like many others, sat and watched the shocking pictures of the Grand Pier burning yesterday in a state of stunned disbelief as the heart and history of Weston was destroyed in a matter of minutes. The destruction of the pier is no doubt heartbreaking to generations of Westonians like myself who have grown up with it and spent (and still do) many (many)a happy day on it.
My family although now scattered across the UK regularly visit Weston and in particuar the pier and my 5 year old nephew in Shrewsbury was inconsolable watching the fire on the news. I cannot imagine what you must be feeling at the moment having been the proud owners of Weston's most iconic building and prized asset for only a matter of months, before your plans and investment to enhance the facility were destroyed. I sincerely hope that investigations over the coming days show that the remaining structure is not significantly damaged and therefore that the rebirth of the pier can commence without delay.
I do not know you personally, but I have no doubt that someone with your ability, dedication and drive to succeed in the competitive insurance business, will certainly have the drive and desire to rebuild the pier to its former glory - and beyond. I only hope that the Local Council shows the same desire and commitment. The Local Councillor's were understandably trying to put a brave face on the disaster but, without doubt, Weston's attraction as a tourist resort has been hard hit. We need a dedicated team set up at the Council to proactively fast track any planning/ listed building issues and work with you to rebuild this icon without delay.
I wish you every success and look forward to visiting the new 'Grand Pier' in the coming years!

I just wanted to pass on my sympathy to the owners of this beautiful pier. I have been coming to Weston and the pier since I was a child with my grandad and now bring my daughter with hers. We were all devastated about the fire. Our other reason for writing is to say we really hope you are going to rebuild, we were really looking forward to visiting the newly improved pier this summer and hope there will still be a rebuilt pier to visit in the future. I know you must all be devastated by this but remember you have so many people, mothers, fathers, grandparent and children who your pier is woven into all our childhood memories rooting for you to rise from the ashes once more. Please please please don't give up rebuilt and shine once more.
With love

Just wanted to leave a message on here to say how very sad we are about the terrible fire on the pier. We have only just returned from a lovely weekend away at Weston and were only walking on the pier a few days ago. My four year old was in tears seeing the pier on fire on the news. We sincerely hope that things improve for you soon and that there are happier times ahead.
With Best Wishes

I am so very sorry indeed for your tragic loss in the dear old beloved Grand Pier. I am totally devastated and feel, as you must, that I have lost a dear one. Being born and bred in Weston 58 years ago I have wonderful happy memories of times spent on it from a child to a teenager, an adult and now as a Grandmother taking her Grandchildren on it and pray that you will be able to do as they did in 1930 (when my Father watched it burn then) and that is to rebuild her very quickly and let her rise again from her ashes. Weston needs her. Please.

Just to say how sorry I am to here about the fire on the pier, we bring our children for a few trips most summer's from Birmingham and were very impressed by the improvements. I hope that although this must be a difficult time you know how much the people of Weston and visitors think of all the great things you offer and the pier's importance.

I am so sorry about the pier. I was one of the many who felt I had to go and "be there", even though I knew it would be to just stand and stare. I hope you will get the okay to open at least some part again soon, and I'm sure in time it will rise again as it did before. Good luck with your efforts in that direction. Regards

I was very shocking to hear of the fire yesterday, Not only I, but some of my family including my mother and my late father visited the pier with me in the Eighties while we stayed in Somerset. I came back to the pier alone almost every summer in the Ninities and early in the new Millenum before bus stopped commenting from my home town in Bridgwater and back. I had planned to make a final trip to WSM this summer before I go back to Winchester where most of my family mow lives for disability reasons but now the pier is destroyed I doubt that. But I hope that the pier wil be rebuilt but I would like to see building restored in old glory, not too modern, just the old style like Victorian, Edwarian or the 1930's style! Good luck on rebuilding!

Like everyrone else, I was so, so sorry to hear about the fire (but also glad that no-one was hurt). As a freelance tour guide who does offbeat town walks for groups (including three in W-s-M, which as a Brummie I hold in natural affection!) I look forward, not back, the the Pier being there again at the centre of things. Don't be downhearted or pessimistic. The St Kilda Pier Kiosk in Melbourne, Australia was burned and they took the opportunity to restore it beautifully.

Hello, we were devastated to see what happened to your pier - please accept my very best wishes for your restoration - as a Trustee of Clevedon Pier I can fully apreciate what you must feel - like losing an old friend.
An offer of help that may be irrelevant - but might be useful. I own a fully operational light hovercraft that used to be used for commercial costal survey work, before retirement and restoration. She is a 2 - 3 seater and fully capable of transporting people and light equipment on to the mud flats. In my wilder years I was a regular operator on Weston beach with a previous craft so I do know the area fairly well. We were also at Heliday last Saturday giving demonstrations. If you have need of the craft please let me know.
I operate it as a hobby and would be very pleased to help out. We are not available next week but apart from that we live at Brockley and the craft is always kept ready to go. We can come down on an ad hoc basis if needed. I am fully insured for leisure use and as this would be non commercial I don't see a problem. we run a business but are partly retired and this is our quiet time of year so if you need a hovercraft, let me know. Best reagrds Ross Floyd

As a former resident of W-s-M, I am so saddened to see the loss of the Grand Pier for you and the people of Weston. I was heartened by your pledge to rebuild the pier and I look forward to visiting it in years to come. Please don't give up. Why not get the bbc to film a documentary going forward on the whole challenge - I would be interested to watch it as I'm sure others will be and it will be invaluable marketing tool to entice visitors once you do re-open - it may even keep your employees involved - turn them into the re-development team! Best of luck to you and your team. Regards Yvonne

My wife and I were sad to see the news yesterday. The pier has become a fornightly trip from tewkesbury this year. What you had created was wonderful. In the help to re-build the pier, can I make a suggestion, If you go to some of the piers in Dorset e.g Swanage or the IOW (Yarmouth)anyone who has contributed to the renovation, and has dedicated funds has had in return a plank dedicated to the them, e.g you can donate money in family names or rememberance, I would like to be able to Donate £200 for the name of a plank to be dedicated to my late brother and our family name on it, it could be something that could assist with raising funds for the pier to be restored to its formal glory. Please can you let me know whether this is viable in the future. Its a sad loss to us all, who have been able to grow up and play on the pier. Thanks & Regards Venita Lewis Bristol

Dear Sir or Madam, We were shocked to hear about the fire on the pier at Weston. My finacé, who is English, is from Swindon and he always used to go to Weston as a child, and only last year we spent two nights in Weston and of course went to the pier as well. It saddens us deeply to see the photos and video footage of this great place going up in flames. We just hope it can be restored! Best wishes, our thoughts are with you at this very sad time. Hi,I have no idea if anyone is looking at emails on here now, but i just wanted to say, i was absolutely devasted to see the fire on the Grand Pier, I have fond memories of walking along the promenade and playing in and around the amusement arcade, the memory that brings a tear to my eye, was remembering how my sister and I used to lose our money between the floorboards, our father having to give us more coins and then us trying to look through to the sand below. I hope that the Grand pier can be re-built, its such a sad loss, the pier was Weston and without the pier we will be lost.

Hello, Please let me tell you how devasted I am over your incredible loss. The person whom stated "The Pier was the Heartbeat of Weston" absolutely got it right. Of course the Pier must be rebuilt, and you'll have amazing support from the community, rebuilding the "New Heartbeat of Weston". I illustrate architectural 'future' buildings and will gladly sketch a color proposal for you at NO COST. I'm sure you understand that the 'New Pier' must resemble the old one and be strongly 'Art Deco' stylised. Please save me a small piece of the old one! Best wishes & good luck on your new beginning. I just wanted to drop you a line to say that I, and I am sure many, many Westonians, are thinking of you and Kerry at this time. I am sure that both of you must be utterly devastated by events of this dreadful day. Please know that the passion and commitment you have always shown towards our home town of Weston-super-Mare, and that the statement made today committing to re-build this wonderful, iconic pier is much appreciated and admired by so many people. Both locals and visitors alike. We all feel a sense of grieving at this loss, but soon, I am sure, that this shared energy will be changed to one of immense positivity and the new Grand Pier will act as as a powerful catalyst to the regeneration of Weston-super-Mare. I just wanted to let you know I'm so genuinely devistated about whats happened to the pier. I visited almost daily either using the rides with my family or sitting on the runway in the sun with a good book. You where doing wonders for the community with all of the improvements you had made and employed many of my friends who loved working with you. I was heartbroken and still am that this old friend has now burnt away as if it where nothing. I probably speak for all of Weston when I say it feels like the heart and soul has been ripped out our town. I am so sorry to see the news today of what happened to a piece of our history. My heart goes out to not only the new owners, but also to all the employees. Although I now live in the Dominican Republic, I still consider myself a Somerset lad, having grown up in Cheddar, and to see part of my childhood memories disapear in such a way breaks my heart. To you all, I wish you the best of luck, whatever the future brings. Warm regards, Tony Willies

I was devastated to learn that the grand pier had burnt down, it was very sad to watch it on the news this morning. My parents live in Weston and every visit is spent on the pier, with all family members young and old. Many child hood memories came flooding back. just wanted to say how sorry i am to hear about the devastating fire today. I am a firefighter in Norfolk and about 7 years ago I attended a large amusement complex on fire which was at the head of the old pier. From arriving at the scene the whole building was alight from end to end inside half an hour as in your case. I hope you are able to rebuild this wonderful landmark with the support of local people as happened following our fire. The thing i cannot beleive is that I walked through this building for the first time only 3 weeks ago when visiting my friends who work for Avon fire and rescue. I wish you the best of luck for the future. good luck john linden

I am confident that there will be ways that my members, a number of whom asre Weston based, and I are going to be able to help you and the local authorities in your plans for the future. I have to say at the moment, I don't know which ways that help will come from, but please, please, please contact me if there is anything at all that you think I can help you with. It is with heavy heart that I send this email. We were visitors to the Pier May07, while on holiday. We traveled from London to Weston Super Mare by train. My husband has fond memories of the pier from childhood, and he really wanted me to see it. I am glad I had the chance and was looking forward to coming again in the summer 2009. We will visit Weston, but I am very sad that I will not be able to take that walk with my husband again. Our hearts are with you with this lose. Yours truly sad, Don and Donna Spencer, Canada

So sorry to see todays fire. My heart goes out to the Michels family who were actually trying to improve Weston. The pier has so many memories for so many people. My late grandad worked there for years and I am sure he would be gutted today. Hope you get all the support you need to re build this grand place.

Just like to say how sorry we are to hear of todays unfortunate tragedy. As a child and growing up, I have enjoyed many years at WSM,and have fond memories of the pier with my family. A ritual to the end of a day to stroll down the pier to the penny slot machines. Even now having 3 girls, we still enjoy a day out (just being the other side of Swindon)and as I did, the end of the day off we would go to the pier! We will miss it dearly, but we wish you the best of luck for the future. We will be back to WSM. Lots of love Vicki Wyborn & Family.

Can't believe what has happened. The pier will be greatly missed. Was devastated when I heard it on the news. Pier has been an icon of Weston for many years. Best wishes and heartfelt sadness for you all.

I am so shocked to hear the news. I was walking past yesterday, it was busy and looked so fantastic since the facelift. So sorry this has happened so soon into the ownership and when a great year was on the cards. We said last night what a great job you had done and regret now that we didn't take a photo or walk along it (we did though about a month ago). On the local radio this morning, many people were shocked and upset so please rebuild it as it has a special place in many peoples hearts from our childhood. Again I am choked and really feel for all of those who put such an effort in to the restoration.

Gutted to hear the dreadful new about the Grand Pier. The place will always occupy a special place in heart after so many happy childhood memories there. All the more upsetting after the wonderful work that had gone into turning the place into a state of the art tourist attraction. My thoughts are with all those affected and I really hope the pier can rise again. I can't imagine Weston without it.
